In September 2017 our ITA programme was endorsed with the IADC Safety Award. The project ‘Transport of Pipeline Optimization’ was selected as winner out of 13 nominees.
Our colleague Maarten Tronckoe, Transport Supervisor, initiator and inspirer of the awarded initiative, explains how he implemented ITA in his daily job.
“We developed, designed and tested this optimized working process for transport of pipelines together, in team and on site. We evaluated the old method and thought of new possibilities. In the end, we combined new ideas with existing techniques. It all resulted in an overall safer process to handle and transport pipelines.”
Handling and transportation of pipelines is a reoccurring topic in the dredging industry. In which way did your team adapt the working method?
“We decided to combine three existing techniques to improve the process. We use DHATEC cradles on the truck platform and lashing straps to secure the pipelines. These cradles are adjustable to the pipeline diameter. With C-pipe hooks and attached soft slings, we make the handling safer and ergonomically easier for the rigger. Finally, we use spreader beams to position the soft slings with C-hooks more optimally so that the riggers can easily attach the load from the ground by using taglines.”
Is this new working method proven to be more efficient?
“Definitely yes. We tested and evaluated different configurations of techniques to optimize this process. The awarded process eventually proved to be the best. My team and I, we are very proud to be rewarded for our efforts. For us, this is a really nice example of our Imagine Think Act programme.”
In the meantime, we decided to implement the new working method of Maarten and his team on all our workshops and logistic hubs worldwide.
